theDOME

First debuted at Dubai Design Days 2016

Material/ carrara + marquini marble
Dimensions/ approx. 5"x5"x5"

What happens when we re-imagine cultural objects in modern materials? Does it help us reconnect with culture? Here, we explore this notion and carve everyday cultural objects from pure marble, in an attempt to have the contemporary pieces reconnect traditions with today, activating the nuances of culture.

theDOME is a series of modern day mubkharas- incense burners- carved purely out of a solid block of marble. The shapes are inspired by mosque domes, with their faceted edges inspired by the geometric patterns often used in the culture, with the notion of repetition. theDOME consists of two identical halves that act as a sculpture when combined, and used as a mubkhara when detached.
